Ultrasound imaging has become a very popular diagnostic tool in medical profession. It is being commonly used in obstetrics and soft tissue imaging of many parts of the body. Cardiac, vascular, thyroid, renal, liver and gall bladder scans are routinely conducted using ultrasound imaging. Objective of this program is to give an overview of the technological development in this area, physics of this modality, analysis, interpretation and clinical applications.

International Conference on “NANO Technology - Materials & Composites for Frontier Applications”

Nanoscience involves research to discover new behaviors and properties of materials with dimensions at the nanoscale which ranges roughly from 1 to 100 nanometers(nm).

Nanotechnology, shortened to "Nanotech", is the study of the control of matter on an atomic and molecular scale. Generally nanotechnology deals with structures of the size 100 nanometers or smaller, and involves developing materials or devices within that size.

Nanotechnology is very diverse, ranging from novel extensions of conventional device physics, to completely new approaches based upon molecular self-assembly, to developing new materials with dimensions on the nanoscale, even to speculation on whether we can directly control matter on the atomic scale.

There has been much debate on the future of implications of nanotechnology. Nanotechnology has the potential to create many new materials and devices with wide-ranging applications, such as in medicine, electronics, and energy production etc. Similarly composite products have tremendous scope in aeroscope, defence and automobile sector with the concept of high strength / light wieght.

18TH NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ULTRASONICS - VIT UNIVERSITY

Ultrasonics Society of India (USI) has been regularly organizing workshops, Seminars, Symposia and Conferences at National and International levels every year, in different parts of the country. In the successful series of National Symposia on Ultrasonics, the 18th National Symposium on Ultrasonics (NSU-XVIII) is being organized jointly by Physics Division, School of Science and Humanities, VIT University, Vellore and Ultrasonics Society of India during 21-23 December 2009 at VIT University, Vellore, Tamil Nadu. The symposia will cover the latest trends on all aspects of ultrasonics research, development and applications, with the focal theme “Biomedical Ultrasonics”.

The NSU-XVIII is intended to provide a common platform to scientists, technologists, academicians, users and manufacturers of ultrasonic instruments, devices and materials for industries, medical and other applications in addition to materials characterization. This symposium will help in developing a greater mutual appreciation of related disciplines apart from the state-of-art exposure to the areas of direct interest to different participants. Such interactions will help in the evolution of inter-disciplinary and inter-institutional collaborative programs of pure and applied ultrasonics.

Abstract of one page (print ready, Times New Roman, single line space, 12 point) should be sent electronically to the Convenor, NSU-XVIII latest by 20th September 2009. The acceptance of the papers will be communicated by 30th September 2009. Full papers have to be submitted latest by 31st October 2009.

All papers accepted for presentation for the Symposium will be published in the form of proceedings. The full length manuscript should be submitted through e-mail attachment, as per the guidelines of the Journal. One of the authors must be registered for the inclusion of the paper in the proceeding. All the contributions presented at the symposium will be considered for publication in a special issue of the Journal of Pure and Applied Ultrasonics, a quarterly publication of the Society, after normal reviewing procedure.

The Ultrasonics Society of India will award its ' Dr. M. Pancholy Award ' to the Best Paper presented in the Symposium (NSU-XVIII). The best paper will be adjudged through a strict critical assessment of the quality of paper and its presentation, by a committee. The award will be presented by the President, USI, to one of the author (the presenter, preferably below 40 years of age), during the valedictory session of the symposium, NSU-XVIII.

The workshop cum exhibition is organized to bring the ultrasonic industries at the front end and to provide them a platform to interact with the leading institutions and research groups for identifying the possible areas of industrial research. It will also benefit the research scholars and the students as it will expose them to the latest developments in ultrasonics.

The speakers for this workshop will be from India and abroad. The workshops in parallel would cover the following topics:

Sensors and sensor networks - SENNET 09 CONFERENCE IN VIT UNIVERSITY

Sensors and sensor networks have attracted a lot of attention recently due to their indispensable role in several areas such as health care, environment, energy, energy system, automation engineering, food safety, national security, and missile manufacturing. Present R&D activities are focusing on more sensitive and powerful sensor systems with increased performance and functionality.

Sensors are playing a vital role in almost all areas of Engineering, Technology and medicine. Advanced sensors are employed to detect trace quantities of nuclear, chemical, and biological agents and explosives. When deployed at the nation’s ports, bridges, tunnels, and transportation hubs, these sensors can help law enforcement agencies intercept these dangerous materials. Emerging areas of nanotechnology are paving way for the development of miniature nanosensors which are becoming more popular particularly in the areas of medical diagnosis and biotechnology applications.

The advances in miniaturization, low power circuit designs, low power wireless communication systems and other networking techniques have enabled new technological vision of advanced wireless sensor networks and other integrated networking possible. From engineering and computing perspective, sensor networks offer a rich variety of issues that includes sensor tasking and control, tracking and localization, probabilistic reasoning, sensor data fusion, distributed data bases and communication protocols.

It is imperative to organize a conference focusing on sensors and networks to bring together the academia, industry and R&D organizations around the world to share their innovative ideas, research experience and establish collaborations for further developmental activities in these areas.VIT University in association with UAS Karlsruhe, Germany and I GCAR, Kalpakkam successfully organized SENNET-07 in the month of December 2007.

In view of the role of improved sensors and sensor networks in many areas, and because of constant requests and inspiration from the participants and well- wishers, we are planning to organize it in every 2 years. This year, they plan to conduct from 7 – 10 in the month of December, 2009.

3rd INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE on THE DEVELOPMENT of BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING in VIETNAM , 2010

International University (IU) a member of the Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City, one of the most famous university networks in Vietnam has created its Biomedical Engineering Department. IU is the first and unique public university in Vietnam that teaches all courses in English and was created as a new model to modernize the higher education in Vietnam. IU has selected Professor Vo Van Toi, a Vietnamese American who was a professor in Biomedical Engineering of Tufts University (U.S.) and a director of the Vietnam Education Foundation, a U.S. federal agency devoted to higher education for Vietnam, as the chairman of the BME Department.

The theme of this conference is: “New frontiers in Biomedical Engineering”. People are invited to be part of this conference to present their latest results and to set a direction to further the development of biomedical engineering in Vietnam. They can give a talk, initiate a special interest session and/or organize a tutorial session on a special topic to improve knowledge in this field or to help people of different background to convert into Biomedical Engineering. The University solicit all interdisciplinary works, which links life and health sciences to engineering and basic sciences, and covers from molecular to upper levels and from methodology to instrumentation. The official language is English.

PURPOSES
1.To give Vietnamese educators, students, researchers, administrators and policy makers the opportunity to learn about the related works and models in the U.S. and elsewhere, and to present their accomplishments

2.To give international scholars the opportunity to learn of Biomedical Engineering activities in Vietnam for future collaborations; and to give US professional institutions (IEEE, AIMBE, etc.) opportunity to explore the possibility to establish BME chapters in Vietnam.

3.To develop the relationship between international and local industry, and to motivate further development of BME in Vietnam.

The IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI) is the premier forum for the presentation of technological advances in theoretical and applied biomedical imaging. ISBI 2010 will be the seventh meeting in this series. The previous meetings have played a leading role in facilitating interaction between researchers in medical and biological imaging. The 2010 meeting will continue this tradition of fostering crossfertilization among different imaging communities and contributing to an integrative approach to biomedical imaging across all scales of observation.

ISBI is a joint initiative of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) and the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS). The 2010 meeting will feature an opening morning of tutorials, followed by a scientific program of plenary talks, special sessions, and oral and poster presentations of peer-reviewed contributed papers.

High-quality papers are solicited containing original contributions to the mathematical, algorithmic, and computational aspects of biomedical imaging, from nano- to macro-scale. Topics of interest include image formation and reconstruction, computational and statistical image processing and analysis, dynamic imaging, visualization, image quality assessment, and physical, biological, and statistical modeling. Papers on molecular, cellular, anatomical, and functional imaging modalities and applications are welcomed. All accepted papers will be published in the proceedings of the symposium and will be available online through the IEEExplore database.
