Master's degree in Cognitive Neuroscience - Radboud University (Netherlands)

The topmaster in Cognitive Neuroscience has been developed by scientists of five faculties of the Radboud University Nijmegen (Faculty of Arts; Faculty of Social Sciences; Faculty of Medical Sciences; Faculty of Science; Mathematics and Computing Science; Faculty of Philosophy).

Cognitive Neuroscience investigates cognitive functions such as action, perception, language, memory, and attention, and their neural foundations. Cognitive Neuroscience is one of the top areas of research at the Radboud University Nijmegen. In Nijmegen the research in Cognitive Neuroscience focusses on three areas: language and language processing, perception and action, and the neural foundations of cognition. The three specialisations within the master's in Cognitive Neuroscience are linked with these three main fields of research.

The master's in Cognitive Neuroscience is embedded in the unique expertise centres on the campus: Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, F.C. Donders Centre, Centre for Language Studies, the Nijmegen Institute for Cognition and Information, the departments of Biophysics and Medical Physics and several research groups of the University Medical Centre St. Radboud. This guarantees a top-flight environment for research and education in Cognitive Neuroscience.

M. Tech. (Clinical Engineering) & Ph.D. (Biomedical Devices and Technology) by SCTIMST / IIT-M / CMC

M. Tech. (Clinical Engineering) & Ph.D. (Biomedical Devices and Technology)

Joint programme by :
Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM), Chennai (India)
Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore (India)
Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), Trivandrum (India).

Introduction

Over the last five decades, healthcare delivery has increasingly become technology driven - be it diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients in the hospitals, or the development of new drugs, vaccines and medical devices. Today India imports almost 80% of the implants and devices used in our country. As a result, healthcare costs are high and continue to increase. In order to address this issue, a twofold strategy is needed.

Firstly, it is required to set up the infrastructure and have trained human resources for indigenous technology development. Secondly, it is necessary to develop human resources for ensuring efficient and effective utilization of the technology at the healthcare delivery points - i.e., mainly in the hospitals.

The three institutions - IIT Madras, CMC-Vellore, and SCTIMST - Trivandrum, each having a set of unique strengths and facilities, have joined together in starting two programmes - “M.Tech in Clinical Engineering” and “PhD in Biomedical Devices & Technology” to address the issue of
capacity building for reducing India’s dependence on imports of medical devices. A unique feature of these courses is the clinical attachment with a maximum exposure to the clinical
environment. This ensures that, at the end of the course, the students will be able to interact effectively with the clinicians, and other medical and paramedical staff in the hospital resulting in the identification ‘unmet clinical needs’. This is also expected to trigger further research leading to development of innovative indigenous healthcare technology.

Admission :

(1) M.Tech. (Clinical Engineering)

Aim : To train engineers to manage and ensure safe and effective use of technology in hospitals and healthcare delivery settings.

Duration : Two and a half years (rotation through all the three institutions).
Eligibility : B.E./B.Tech./Recognized four year course; on the basis of GATE subject (AE, CE, CH, EC, EE, IN, ME,MN, MT, PI, TF, XE) and score.

Selection: Screening test and personal interview.

(2) Ph.D. (Biomedical Devices and Technology)

Aim: *To be leaders in research and development
*To be innovators and entrepreneurs in Biomedical Devices Technology

Duration : According to current requirements of IIT Madras
Eligibility: M.E./M.Tech./M.S(Eng.) with the same eligibility conditions for IITM PhD entrance/M.Sc. Physics.

Selection : Screening test and personal Interview

Hostel : Hostel facilities are available in all the three organizations.

MTech (Clinical engineering) & PhD (Biomedical Devices & Technology) in IIT Madras, India

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM), Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum (SCTIMST, where the first indigenous heart valve was developed) and Christian Medical College, Vellore (CMC), have jointly initiated a M. Tech. (Clinical Engineering) programme and a Ph.D. programme (Major: Biomedical Devices and Technology). The aim is to address the country’s need of human resource development in Clinical Engineering as well as in Biomedical Device Development, and thereby contribute to the overall development of healthcare delivery in the country.

M.Tech. in Clinical Engineering

There are about 16,000 hospitals in the country. People with a M.Tech. in Clinical Engineering would be capable of managing and maintaining the wide range of equipment used in hospitals. The total management of this aspect in a hospital, leading to cost-effective procurement and utilization of equipment without sacrificing safety and reliability, will also be addressed by them.

The M.Tech. (Clinical Engineering) program has an innovative approach of combining formal engineering training with hands-on clinical exposure. It is a unique undertaking and will exploit the innate strengths and facilities of the three institutes – SCTIMST, IITM and CMC. These organizations together hold strong backgrounds in Technology, Biomedical Engineering and Medical Sciences.

The selection will be done once a year on an All-India basis, probably in May, through a screening test and a personal interview of eligible candidates. The syllabus for the screening test will be sent to eligible candidates well before the test. The M.Tech. programme will be of two-and-a-half years duration. The students will study and train at all the three participating Institutes.

Eligibility: B.E./B.Tech./Recognized four year course; on the basis of GATE subject (AE, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, IT, ME, MN, MT, PI, TF, XE, XL) and score

Please see the newspaper advertisement for important dates in the application process.

ii.)To be innovators and entrepreneurs in biomedical technology

The students will study and train at all the three participating Institutes.

The selection will be done on an All-India basis, at least twice a year, probably in May and in November, through a screening test and a personal interview of eligible candidates.
