PhD Position at the Laboratory for fundamental BioPhotonics

Two PhD student positions are available immediately at the Laboratory for fundamental BioPhotonics (LBP) at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland.

The complex devices that are found in our daily lives such as computers and mobile phones are constructed by modifying hard materials such as metals, silicon, and glass. The fabrication of the working components in these devices relies on the use of planar substrates. This limits the spatial degrees of freedom to 2 dimensions. Biological and soft matter systems, such as liquid droplets, nanoparticles, liposomes, cells and viruses are composed of components such as water, lipids, proteins, sugars, and DNA. These components are organized in a 3D network and can often be fine-controlled by temperature, ionic strength, and pH. If the devices of the future would make use of the complexity of soft materials engineered in 3D, enormous advances could be expected in biology, chemistry and medicine. In the Laboratory for fundamental BioPhotonics (LBP) we aim to change this by working at the intersection of nonlinear optics, soft and biological matter, and interface science.
The projects
The projects are collaborative and deal with the fundamental understanding of water and ion structure at hodrophobic/hydrophilic nanoscopic interfaces and membranes. Such interfaces are part of proteins and membranes and determine for a large extent the behavior of biological matter. By using ultrafast surface specific spectroscopy in time and frequency domain, light scattering methods, and appropriate modeling we access fundamental molecular properties of the interfacial region that is often not thicker than a few molecular dimensions.
The candidate
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a background in physics, photonics, engineering, physical chemistry or related area, ideally with experience in nonlinear optics or time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. We offer excellent working conditions and a state-of-the-art infrastructure in a highly dynamic and international environment at the forefront of research.

The Application
Applications should include a motivation, detailed CV, transcripts of diplomas as well as at least two letters of reference. In conjunction to the application the candidate should apply to one of the appropriate doctoral schools (photonics, physics, chemistry, bioengineering,...).
