Phd in Medical Image Transmission - Kingston University, UK

Phd Title : Medical image/video compression and transmission over next generation (wireless) IP networks

Place : Kingston University, London

With the worldwide deployment of mobile and wireless networks, the wireless infrastructure can support a variety of healthcare applications: for instance, thanks to wireless broadband connectivity, medical staff can treat patients more quickly, since the wireless link enables sending an image / video sequence to the hospital from an ambulance / emergency area and interpreting it quickly; current wireless technologies are also making possible hospital consultation from (possibly isolated) user communities.

For video streaming, facing the problem of handling several versions of the same content, new technical approaches such as scalable video coding (e.g., H.264 scalable extension SVC) are designed to save at the server side only one content representation independently from the terminals and networks capacities. The exploitation of scalable video for medical applications is currently very limited, although this is a potential enabling technology for such applications.
The aim of the project is to realise content- and context- aware medical video compression and transmission over (wireless) IP systems based on recent source coding methodologies, such as H.264/AVC or scalable video coding. Compression of 3D/4D medical image data sets will also be addressed. A special focus will be on innovative solutions for interactive media transmission.

The project will be developed in collaboration with one of the major industrial players in the area.
