About the University
SRM University is part of the 36 year-old SRM Group of Educational Institutions, sponsored by the Valliammai Society. The main campus of SRM University at Kattankulathur, near Chennai is spread over 200 acres. There are two more campuses, one in Chennai City at Ramapuram and another at Modi Nagar, New Delhi. SRM University offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in the disciplines of Engineering and Technology. It has excellent infrastructure including state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, dedicated high-speed internet, a modern library, and other general amenities. The library has books and journals on a wide range of Engineering topics and subscribes to e-journals from Science Direct.
About the Department
Biomedical Engineering is one of six departments in the School of Bioengineering, which is housed in a separate seven storied building of area 150,000 square feet with classrooms, research and teaching laboratories, and faculty rooms. It was established in the year 2004 with active clinical/industry partnership in association with our sister institution, SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Institute, Kattankulathur. Since then the Department has been actively engaged in diversified research and teaching. Its main objective is to provide a knowledge-based, timely, cost effective and high quality service to clinicians in a professional and responsible manner, in order to improve and enhance patient care by supporting all aspects of care related technology.
Rationale
Osteoporosis (often called "bone thinning") is a major public health problem in India and in many other parts of the world. It is characterized by reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and deterioration in bone structure. It is clinically expressed as an increased risk of fracture, particularly in the spine, hip and wrist. It predominantly affects post-menopausal women and the elderly of both sexes. One in 8 men and 1 in 3 women in India suffer from osteoporosis, making India one of the largest affected countries in the world. An estimated 61 million people in India are reported to be affected by osteoporosis.
Bone Densitometry
Several quantitative or semi-quantitative techniques are available for the measurement of BMD and indices of bone structure, both of which contribute to bone strength. These methods range from variants of simple conventional radiography to sophisticated imaging and absorptiometry. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) has become accepted as the “gold standard” for measuring BMD and may be used to diagnose osteoporosis using a classification system developed by the Word Health Organization. BMD may be combined with risk factors to estimate fracture risk.
Scope of the Workshop
The main aim of the Workshop is to enable participants to understand the scientific principles that underpin bone mineral and related measurements, and to describe the technology that is used in various types of bone densitometer. There will also be discussion of how to interpret BMD values.
Course Content
• Scientific principles of bone densitometry
• Bone densitometer technology
• Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry
• Other bone densitometry methods
• Interpretation of BMD measurements
