Biopac Student Lab (BSL) System

The Biopac Student Lab system is manufactured by BIOPAC Systems, Inc., California. Students in biomedical teaching labs use the BSL system to record data from their own bodies, animals or tissue preparations. The BSL system integrates hardware, software and curriculum materials including over sixty experiments that students use to study the cardiovascular system, muscles, pulmonary function, autonomic nervous system, and the brain.

The BSL system includes data acquisition hardware with built-in universal amplifiers to record and condition electrical signals from the heart, muscle, nerve, brain, eye, respiratory system, and tissue preparations . The data acquisition system receives the signals from electrodes and transducers. The electrical signals are extremely small—with amplitudes sometimes in the microVolt (1/1,000,000 of a volt) range—so the hardware amplifies these signals, filters out unwanted electrical noise or interfering signals, and converts them to a set of numbers that the computer can read. Biopac Student Lab software then displays the numbers as waveforms on the monitor.

The data acquisition system connects to a PC running Windows or Macintosh operating systems, via USB. The electrodes and transducers employ sensors that allow the software to communicate with the students to ensure that they are using the correct devices and collecting good data. Software guides students by using onscreen instructions and a detailed lab manual follows the scientific method. Once students have collected data, they use analysis tools to measure the amplitude and frequency, plus a wide range of other values from the electrical signals . The analysis process allows students to make general comparisons with the data. They can compare their results to published normal values, or the values before and after a subject performed a specified task. They can also compare results with other students in the lab. The software is available in English, French Spanish, Italian, Japanese, and Chinese.

Thousands of undergraduate labs worldwide use the Biopac Student Lab System to teach physiology, pharmacology, biology, neuroscience, psychology, psychophysiology, exercise physiology, and biomedical engineering.

BSL BIOENGINEERING SYSTEM

The BSL Biomedical Engineering System provides extensive recording and analysis options for signal processing curriculum, including bioelectric and biomechanical studies. The data acquisition unit includes four universal, software-programmable amplifiers that can record biopotential and transducer signals. The BSL hardware/software combination creates a virtual instrument that can be tailored for a wide range of measurements with analysis tools for digital filtering, integration, differentiation, FFT, convolution, correlation, and a host of signal processing options. The Breadboard allows students to build and test real circuits and then use the software to compare real results to simulation. Collect, display and investigate data with the BSL System, or use it to direct data to industry-standard applications like MatLab or LabVIEW.

BIOMEDICAL TRAINING IN CARDEA BIOMEDICAL TECHNOLOGIES

Cardea Biomedical Technologies (India) was founded with an aim to device low cost medical devices primarily for the Indian needs. They understand the future of Biomedical in India and hence have been working to generate employment opportunities at large.

It is a common observation that several of the engineering colleges are not able to quench the thirst of an engineering student because of the lack of resources or trained man-power.It results in poor placements, frustation and change of field (commonly observed in Biomedical students).

One of the divisions of Cardea is also involved with providing training to UG and PG students so that they are better prepared for Biomedical Jobs, higher studies or even research.

Cardea brings together on a common platform experts from IIT Delhi, AIIMS, DRDO, Stanford and IEEE.

Cardea Labs provide training in the following areas:

1) Analog Electronics.
2) Digital Signal and Image Processing.
3) MATLAB.
4) Micro-controllers.
5) Wireless Communication.

Special Areas of Research includes:

1) Active Prosthetics.
2) Non-Invasive Diagnostic Device Development.
3) Medical Software Development.

Striking features of the training programme are:

1) Start from scratch - Even final year students start from the very basics and learn the whole spectra of the subject.
2) Theory amalgamated with practical lab classes - Every theory session ends with a hands on practical session for better understanding.
3) Research based projects - Students are encouraged to come up with their own ideas and we work if found feasible. Else the students are encouraged to join any of the on-going research and contribute in that.
4) Career Councelling - Every student gets a personalized expert guidance for their career.
4) Special classes on idea generation and entrepreneurship.
5) Personality Development - Students are encouraged to interact in the class so that they get rid of stage fear and develop a pleasing personality.
6) Job Preparation - Special classes are held by industry experts so that th students are well prepared for jobs.
7) Selection at Cardea Labs - Exceptional students are offered jobs at Cardea Labs itself.

Interested students may approach Cardea Labs with a copy of their latest resume. Resume should clearly depict their College Name, Branch and Year.
