RESULTS OF PORTUGAL FCT GRANTS : (BIOCHEMISTRY & BIOTECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING)

ABOUT FCT (FOUNDATION FOR SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY) - PORTUGAL

The Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) started its operations in August 1997. It succeeds Junta Nacional de Investigação Científica e Tecnológica (JNICT).

The mission of FCT consists in continuously promoting the advancement of scientific and technological knowledge in Portugal, exploring opportunities that become available in any scientific or technological domain to attain the highest international standards in the creation of knowledge, and to stimulate their diffusion and contribution to improve education, health, environment, and the quality of life and well being of the general public.

This mission is mainly accomplished through the funding, subsequent to the evaluation of the merit, of proposals presented by institutions, research teams or individuals in public open calls, and also through cooperation agreements and other forms of support in partnership with universities and other public or private institutions, in Portugal and abroad.

The results of the activities of FCT are, in essence, the additional contributions of individuals, research groups and institutions who have been awarded financing.

Functions Of FCT

1.)To promote, finance, follow and evaluate science and technology institutions, programs, projects and qualification of human resources;
2.)To promote and support infra-structures for scientific research and technological development;
3.)To promote the diffusion of scientific and technological culture and knowledge, in particular when relevant for educational purposes in close collaboration with the agency Ciência Viva;
4.)To stimulate the update, interconnection, reinforcement and availability of science and technology information sources.

Science and technology are considered in a wide sense including exact, natural and health sciences, engineering, social sciences and humanities.

IDENTIFYING SCHOLARSHIP SCAMS

Scholarship-positions.com gave few tips to identify scholarship scams :

1. Application Fee:
Scholarship scams and organizations that charge fees for almost all the scholarship availing procedures that can be undertaken free of cost. Never pay for scholarship application fees.

2. Guaranteed Scholarship Award:
Scams that guarantee an award- Now this trap can be tempting to an aspiring student. Nobody can guarantee a scholarship. If you are worthy and your concerns are true you will certainly get it. Don't get into the trap called 'Scholarship guarantee'. No such thing exists.

3. You "Win" a Scholarship that You Never Applied:
Scholarships scams will contact college students informing them that they have won full college scholarship. You cannot win a scholarship if you have never for applied for it.

4. Free Scholarship Scams:
Nothing in life comes easily. There is no such thing like Free Scholarship. Scholarship is generally given to students with high quality academic record. Simply money does not grow on three.

5. Request for Personal Information:
Some scams ask for your personal details, such as bank statement, date of birth, passwords, account numbers, social security number etc. Never share your personal information with anyone online. Your identity might get cloned.

Fulbright Foreign Student Program for Master's or phD at USA universities

A mainstay of America’s public-diplomacy efforts, the Fulbright Foreign Student Program brings citizens of other countries to the United States for Master’s degree or Ph.D. study at U.S. universities or other appropriate institutions. The program has brought some of the world’s finest minds to U.S. campuses and offers program participants insight into U.S. society and values.

Many foreign Fulbright grantees are early-career professionals who will return to take leadership positions in their home countries, often working at universities or in government service.

More than 1,800 new Foreign Fulbright Fellows enter U.S. academic programs each year. Foreign students apply for Fulbright Fellowships through the Fulbright Commission/Foundation or U.S. Embassy in their home countries. The Institute of International Education (IIE) arranges academic placement for most Fulbright nominees and supervises participants during their stay in the United States.

Nanomaterials PhD Fellowship at University College Dublin in Ireland

The PhD project is to develop a new method for studying the biophysical solvation of nanomaterials. The previous research predicted a novel Raman breathing (SBM) mode which represents a new probe/sensor of solvation. Using experiment, simulation and theory in the new project we will a) detect for the first time the SBM b) make very accurate measurements of solvation shifts c) derive nanotube-solvent interaction potentials and d) try to characterise biophysical interactions using such shifts relevant to biophysics and nanotoxicology. This project would suit a student with a physics or chemistry background who is interested in biophysics and will be a mixture of experimental and theoretical research.

HBIGS International PhD Program in Molecular and Cellular Biology- Heidelberg (Germany)

The Hartmut Hoffmann-Berling International Graduate School of Molecular and Cellular Biology (HBIGS)

The HBIGS International PhD Program in Molecular and Cellular Biology Heidelberg offers training and excellent research opportunities for outstanding PhD and MD/PhD students from Germany and abroad in a vibrant and stimulating scientific environment. Outstanding PhD students will receive competitive fellowships of up to 1468,- EUR/month.

The focus of the Graduate School on molecular and cellular biology takes into account that molecular and cellular biology provides the conceptual and technological foundation on which most other fields, sub-disciplines and specialized areas of life and biosciences rest - from structural biology to bioinformatics, from molecular medicine to biotechnology, and from immunology to systems biology. A higher qualification in molecular and cellular biology will, therefore, prepare graduates for leading positions in all areas where in-depth knowledge of biological processes is required - be it in academia, industry or the public sector.

Should a principal nominee not meet eligibility requirements, s/he will be disqualified, and the alternate nominee will be upgraded to principal nominee status. Those designated as alternates will only be elevated if a principal is disqualified. After the technical review, up to two principal nominees from each country will be presented for review to a U.S.-based selection committee, which will include prominent academics and professionals in the appropriate scientific fields.

The Indian candidates recommended as nominees must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), as well as the General and Subject Graduate Record Examination (GRE), if applicable, no later than August 2009. Candidates, who do not have valid GRE scores at the time of application but are selected as nominees, will be required to take the GRE General Test. A nominee is expected to have achieved a quantitative score of at least 700. In addition, a GRE subject test will be required of all candidates selected as nominees for the following fields of study: biology; biochemistry; cell and molecular biology; chemistry; computer science; mathematics; and physics. USIEF will provide test fee vouchers for taking the required tests. Applicants who have taken tests should submit copies of their score reports along with their applications by the May 1 deadline.

The U.S. based committee will make its selection from applications worldwide. Applications of candidates selected by the U.S-based committee will then be forwarded for approval to the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board and then placement by IIE. IIE will identify appropriate U.S. institutions and apply on the behalf of finalists, taking into consideration their fields of study and research interests to ensure the best placement available. If a recommended candidate has previously applied to U.S. institutions and has requested a deferral from the institution, the candidate should indicate this on the university preference page on the application form.
