PhD positions in Italy

Positions available and subjects
The Scuola Normale Superiore (SNS) is accepting applications for PhD positions in the Faculty of Sciences. Spring and autumn selections will be held for the 2011/2012 academic year as follows:

• 4 positions in Molecular Biophysics (in partnership with IIT-Italian Institute of Technology)
• 4 positions in Chemistry
• 8 positions in Physics
• 3 positions in Condensed Matter Physics (in partnership with the Silvio Tronchetti Provera Foundation and with the IIT-Italian Institute of Technology)
• 3 positions in Neurobiology

 Admission requirements
The following are application requisites:

• MS, MSc or equivalent. Candidates may apply prior to completing their MS/MSc, but must present their diploma by 31 October 2011
• less than 30 years of age as of 31 October 2011
• knowledge of English or Italian
• never to have been expelled from the SNS
• not to have applied more than once for a PhD at the SNS
• never to have been definitively sentenced to prison  
• results from the ETS - GRE – General Test and the GRE-Subject Test (http://www.ets.org/gre/) if the MS/MSc was not completed in a nation member of the European Higher Education Area (http://www.ehea.info/members.aspx). See Further Information pages for subject test details.

Application deadline and process
Application for admission to the competition must arrive at the SNS:

• by Thursday 31 March 2011 for the spring session;
• by Monday 12 September 2011 for the autumn session.

The application must be made on plain paper, in either Italian or English, using the format provided in the Application Form, accompanied by all required attachments listed on the Further Information pages, and signed by the candidate.
