PhD in Neurosciences - France

The Paris school of Neuroscience (ENP) is a thematic research network for advanced studies. Its pre-PhD (1 year) and PhD (3 years) programs are open to highly talented and motivated students, who received their undergraduate training outside of France, irrespective of their original disciplines.

There are two deadlines for application every year:
Deadlines: March 30th and September 30th.

ENP PhD Program

The Paris School of Neuroscience (ENP) is a research network for advanced studies, made up of the majority of high profile neuroscience research laboratories at institutes and universities throughout the Paris region. It provides an outstanding multidisciplinary curriculum to students through seminar series, lab rotations, and exposure to top neuroscientists. The ENP recognizes the potential for significant scientific advances at the boundary of research fields. To foster strong interactions, synergy and accessibility of resources, its faculty includes internationally recognized experts across the large field of the neurosciences - from basic molecular and cellular studies, computational science to brain imaging and clinical research. The program involves rotations in different ENP labs during the first year followed by three years of research in one ENP laboratory towards a PhD. The program is specially designed to attract top international students that have already demonstrated signs of achievement; else, the program imposes few specific requirements. Students design their own programs leading to the PhD with oversight by faculty committees ensuring appropriate depth and breadth of training. All teaching is in English. Administrative support is provided for the installation in Paris.

Application: 2 calls per year (March 30 and September 30)

The program is especially designed to attract motivated top international students that have already shown signs of achievement in their own countries. The call is open to students from different backgrounds (biology, medicine, physics, and mathematics) who can demonstrate a strong interest in the field of Neuroscience. Applicants should have the equivalent of a bachelor’s or master’s degree obtained outside of France. There are 2 programs for each call:- The pre-PhD Program is a one year program that involves Neuroscience classes (Master 2 program) and short (2-3 months) rotations in different ENP labs. At the term of this year the student should have built his PhD project and chosen the appropriate lab to carry it on. Stipends are 1200 € net (all taxes deduced, Health Care included). Students with the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree are expected to follow this program before entering the PhD program. Students with a master’s degree are encouraged to start with rotations but can apply directly to the PhD program. - The PhD program is a 3 year program that involves research training in one of the ENP laboratories. In addition students are expected to attend the ENP Seminar series. Stipends are 1 800 € (income tax not deduced, Health Care included).

Selection process:

- Pre-selection of applicants: Application documents (résumé, motivation letter, and documents showing the level of academic achievements) are sent to two members of the ENP panel (comprised of team leaders of the ENP) who score the applications independently. Eventually all ENP panel members decide in a consortium session about the pre-selection of candidates who meet the ENP criteria.

A telephone interview is organized for all pre-selected candidates. Based on this interview with two experts in the panel, candidates are invited to Paris for a presentation.- Presentations and interviews in Paris are done during a full day. Candidates get the opportunity to present their curriculum, previous work and motivation. They also get the opportunity to know better the ENP members, such as professors, administrators and students.

On the basis of the talks (10 minutes) and the ensuing discussions (10 minutes) the ENP panel makes a final selection of the students which will benefit from the pre-PhD and the PhD program. The ENP will pay the trip and accommodation for all candidates. After each step of the selection process results are communicated by Email to the applicants.
