MTech (Clinical engineering) & PhD (Biomedical Devices & Technology) in IIT Madras, India

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM), Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum (SCTIMST, where the first indigenous heart valve was developed) and Christian Medical College, Vellore (CMC), have jointly initiated a M. Tech. (Clinical Engineering) programme and a Ph.D. programme (Major: Biomedical Devices and Technology). The aim is to address the country’s need of human resource development in Clinical Engineering as well as in Biomedical Device Development, and thereby contribute to the overall development of healthcare delivery in the country.

M.Tech. in Clinical Engineering

There are about 16,000 hospitals in the country. People with a M.Tech. in Clinical Engineering would be capable of managing and maintaining the wide range of equipment used in hospitals. The total management of this aspect in a hospital, leading to cost-effective procurement and utilization of equipment without sacrificing safety and reliability, will also be addressed by them.

The M.Tech. (Clinical Engineering) program has an innovative approach of combining formal engineering training with hands-on clinical exposure. It is a unique undertaking and will exploit the innate strengths and facilities of the three institutes – SCTIMST, IITM and CMC. These organizations together hold strong backgrounds in Technology, Biomedical Engineering and Medical Sciences.

The selection will be done once a year on an All-India basis, probably in May, through a screening test and a personal interview of eligible candidates. The syllabus for the screening test will be sent to eligible candidates well before the test. The M.Tech. programme will be of two-and-a-half years duration. The students will study and train at all the three participating Institutes.

Eligibility: B.E./B.Tech./Recognized four year course; on the basis of GATE subject (AE, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, IT, ME, MN, MT, PI, TF, XE, XL) and score

Please see the newspaper advertisement for important dates in the application process.

Ph.D. (Biomedical Devices and Technology)

The aim of this programme is to train engineers to carry out research and development in the field of biomedical devices and technology. This training would enable them

i.)To be leaders in research and development
ii.)To be innovators and entrepreneurs in biomedical technology

The students will study and train at all the three participating Institutes.

The selection will be done on an All-India basis, at least twice a year, probably in May and in November, through a screening test and a personal interview of eligible candidates. The syllabus for the screening test will be sent to eligible candidates well before the test. An online application available at http://www.biotech.iitm.ac.in/msphd needs to be filled at the appropriate time (with a `yes’ to item 1a), and the print-out of the filled application form along with the other required documents and demand draft needs to be sent to:

G. K. Suraishkumar
Institute Coordinator, Joint Programmes with SCTIMST and CMC
Professor, Department of Biotechnology,
BJMSB building I.I.T. Madras,
Chennai 600 036

Eligibility: M.E. / M. Tech. / M.S. (Eng.) / M.Sc. Physics / B.Tech. with the same eligibility conditions for IIT Madras PhD entrance - please see the IIT Madras research brochure for details
